Declan Rice praises Thomas Partey and Ghana ahead of World Cup showdown
England midfielder Declan Rice has spoken highly of Thomas Partey and Ghana’s squad ahead of Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup Group L clash, acknowledging the quality, pace and physical strength the Black Stars will bring to Boston Stadium.
Rice is expected to line up against his former Arsenal teammate Partey as England look to secure qualification for the knockout stages with a second successive victory.
The pair spent several seasons together in North London and developed a strong understanding before Partey’s departure from Arsenal in 2025.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Rice made it clear that England are expecting a difficult challenge from Ghana despite entering the game as favourites.
“Thomas Partey is a really good player,” Rice said.
“I’ve played a lot against the Ghana players. They bring pace and strength.”
Rice’s comments underline the respect England have for the Black Stars, who opened their World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama thanks to Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time winner.
Ghana are also expected to be strengthened by Partey’s return after the midfielder missed the Panama match.
The 33-year-old remains one of the most experienced players in the Black Stars squad and is likely to play a key role in the midfield battle against Rice and Jude Bellingham.
For Rice, facing Partey adds an extra layer of intrigue to an already important fixture.
The England midfielder enjoyed considerable success alongside the Ghana international at Arsenal and knows first-hand the qualities he brings to a team.
England head into the match after an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening fixture, with Harry Kane scoring twice as the Three Lions moved to the top of Group L.
Ghana, however, have approached the tournament with growing confidence and know that a positive result against England would move them significantly closer to the knockout stages.
