Rubavu: Rwanda Strengthens Measures to Prevent Mpox Outbreak

To combat the Mpox outbreak, Rwandans and Congolese involved in cross-border trade between Rubavu and Goma are implementing preventive measures at the border.

They commend the border measures, such as hand sanitizing and temperature checks, which are essential for detecting the disease.

At the Petite Barrière and La Corniche border posts, over 10,000 people cross daily. Those entering Rwanda must first sanitize their hands with designated hand sanitizer, after which health officials immediately check their temperature for signs of Mpox.

Cross-border traders from both countries report that, despite having limited information about the outbreak, they are aware of and observe the preventive measures being implemented by both countries.

Gisenyi Hospital has observed signs that the outbreak has reached Goma and South Kivu Province and is increasing in severity. Consequently, border measures are being intensified to control the spread.

Dr. Tuganeyezu Orest, director of Gisenyi Hospital, states that anyone showing symptoms at the border will receive prompt assistance. He also plans to collaborate with health authorities in Goma to exchange information and prevent the outbreak.

The Ministry of Health reports that four people in Rwanda have been infected so far. Two have been treated and discharged, while the others remain under medical care.
