Kigali: Men Forge Strategies to Tackle Family Challenges
Held at EAR Diocese headquarters, the event gathered deacons, pastors, and Fathers’ Union members from all parishes.
The gathering showed a strong commitment to Christian men collaborating with organizations to address and reduce negative behaviors in families, including divorce, injustice, abuse, ignorance, and poverty.
James Kazubwenge, Chairman of the Fathers’ Union at the EAR Diocese of Kigali, praised progress and outlined plans to boost engagement at parish and diocesan levels. Plans involve raising awareness and providing training to strengthen the spiritual foundation of Anglican men.
Kazubwenge said, “The aim is to strengthen family structures through Christian values and leverage talents and resources to advance God’s kingdom.”
Dr. Joseph Ntahompagaze, a University of Rwanda lecturer and Fathers’ Union Committee member, presented a strategic framework to help men fulfill their responsibilities, clarifying their roles within families and communities.
He emphasized that men across all parishes should align with a unified vision for creating enduring families, a strategy developed for the benefit of everyone.
Rev. Dr. Antoine Rutayisire urged men to embrace responsibilities such as caring for their spouses, guiding children in faith, and collaborating in the development of their families and the nation.
Mr. Odel Rugema, an administrative officer at the EAR Diocese of Kigali, said men are expected to play a significant role in all diocesan development activities.
Charles Byimbazi, treasurer of the Fathers’ Union at the Kigali Diocese, highlighted the need for strict adherence to membership contributions to ensure successful implementation of planned activities.
Archdeacon Felicien Mpungirehe of Gatsata Parish called on all members—men, women, and youth—to pursue virtuous paths and cultivate strong character.
Rev. Joas Mukiza, Pastor at EAR Ndera Parish, urged men to seek guidance from the Holy Spirit to channel their collective strength constructively and wisely.
Selubuga Alex, a former diocesan leader of the Fathers’ Union, highlighted significant progress within the organization and recommended compiling historical records from its 2015 inception to support future initiatives.
Archdeacon Eric Niyigena, the bishop’s representative, praised the meeting’s organization and its effectiveness in providing clarity and direction. He urged continued dedication and collaboration to advance the union’s mission.
Founded in 2008 at Remera Parish of the EAR Diocese of Kigali, the Fathers’ Union has become a key player in enhancing family life across the region. It now spans nine diocesan levels and 74 parishes, with the diocesan committee formally established in 2015.
