ESSI Nyamirambo pays tribute to former teachers and students killed in Genocide

As the global community, with Rwanda at the forefront marks the 30th anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi, the Muslim Secondary school ‘Ecole secondaire scientifique Islamic’ ESSI Nyamirambo, have paid tribute to former students and teachers killed in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

This ceremony started with a prayer, laying wreaths of honor on the memorial, and lighting the flame of remembrance.

In his address, Headmaster of ESSI Nyamirambo, Sheikh Abdoul Ntamuturano remarked that the loss of lives within the ESSI Nyamirambo community indicated a lack of wisdom, as would normally be expected at Islam.

He urged participants to view halting genocide as evidence that it is possible to confront and defeat evil individuals and their actions.

Sheikh Ntamuturano further urged attendees to diligently strive to ensure that today’s youth can reshape this dark chapter of history.

“So let us be fair as we teach, assess, and mentor them, guided by the principle of equal opportunity.” He said

Iturushimbabazi, AERG representative in ESSI Nyamirambo, highlighted the existence of individuals who continue to underestimate and deny the history of Genocide against the Tutsi.

“The youth should be exemplary in upholding and disseminating the culture of humanity, leading to unity and harmony among Rwandans ; becoming the shining light and transformative agents in the country,” Iturushimbabazi.

Speaking on the occasion, Hamudu Safari, President of Ibuka in Nyarugenge District, appreciated participants who stood with the ESSI Nyamirambo for their support during the difficult period.

He added that while the ESSI Nyamirambo commemorates, it should also focus on rebuilding and positioning itself as a source of hope and problem-solving within society.

“We encourage our youth not to listen to Genocide deniers and detractors, but to follow the teachings of our national leadership, the leadership of the institution, and correct those who want to distort our history,” Safari said.

He concluded by urging survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994 to remain courageous during these challenging times.

The Kigali Islamic Cultural Center provided support to a survivor of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi, enabling him to continue his life’s progress.
