Heavy rains predicted in February
The National Center for Meteorological Sciences ‘Meteo Rwanda’ has predicted that in February 2024 there will be extraordinary rains in the country, warning Rwandans to be careful.
In a statement issued on January 31, 2024, the national weather forecast center said that between 50 and 250 millimeters of rain is expected in February.
The expected heavy rain is slightly higher than the amount of rain that normally falls in the month of February in many parts of the country.
The persistence of El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean is identified as the primary factor contributing to this unusual weather pattern.
Between 200 and 250 mm of rain is expected in certain regions, including Rusizi, Nyamasheke, Nyaruguru, Karongi, Nyamagabe, Rutsiro, and the western areas of Ngororero and Huye Districts.
Other areas, such as the rest of Ngororero and Huye Districts, western Gisagara, eastern Kirehe, Rubavu, Nyanza, Ruhango, Muhanga, and western Kamonyi, are likely to experience rainfall between 150 and 200 mm.
The Northern Province, excluding the southeastern Rulindo District, should brace for 100 to 150 mm of rain.
Less rain is expected in eastern Kamonyi, the remaining parts of Kirehe, Kigali City, the Eastern Province (excluding southeastern Bugesera), and the central corridor from Kayonza to Nyagatare.
