DRC Conflict: Goma under dark times
As the clashes between M23 rebels and Congolese Army, the city of Goma was left without power due to DR Congo bombardment causing extensive damage to the electrical infrastructures.
Violent fighting took place between M23 rebels and FARDC in Kibumba near Kanyamahoro leaving millions of people without electricity.
It meant that across the city, traffic lights went down, as well as Kibumba and other part of Nyiragongo teritory.
In offical statement, Virunga Energies indicated that is not able to restore electricity at the moment and can not specify when its teams will have acces to areas damaged by the clashes.
However, while hospitals and larger industries may have bigger generators, other smaller organisations or private homes lights went off.
“For us it is a huge problem, not only because it deprives the population of electricity, but also because it is the main source of energy for the water pumping stations in the city.” expressed Hertier Mupfuni, Goma resident.
Goma Airport operated normally on Monday because they have their own standby power system.
