DR Congo soldier fires at RDF, killed

RUBAVU, January 16 (RwandwaSun) – Rwandan soldiers shot dead a Congolese soldier who crossed the border and shot at security forces on Tuesday, triggering a brief exchange of fire between the two sides, Rwanda’s defence ministry said.

Already strained relations between the central African neighbours have deteriorated sharply since the M23 rebel group launched a fresh offensive in eastern Congo.

Congo accuses Rwanda of backing the M23. The United Nations, the United States, France and other international powers have made similar allegations.

But Rwanda denies this and says it is being scapegoated for Congo’s military incompetence.

Today incident happened at around 0110hrs , according to a Rwanda Defence Force statement.

Two of the soldiers, Sgt Asman Mupenda Termite (30 yrs) and Cpl Anyasaka Nkoi Lucien (28yrs), were arrested by RDF patrols supported by local neighbourhood watch (Irondo).” reads the statement.

The FARDC soldiers had in their possession one AK-47 gun, four magazines with 105 rounds, one protective vest, and cannabis sachets. The third soldier was shot dead when he fired at the patrols.

“No one on the Rwandan side was injured. Further investigations are ongoing.’ RDF said

This is among many similar incidents where DR Congo soldiers have violated Rwandan territory.

The RDF has formally communicated the incident to the Extended Joint Verification Mechanism (EJVM).
