Boys performed better than girls in the advanced level national exams
The Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) has announced that boys performed better than girls in the advanced level national exams in the last academic year of 2022/2023.
The national exams results were announced on December 4, 2023.
The candidates of the exams included General Science, Technical, Vocational, Scientific and General Education.
In all those categories, the number of boys who excellently performed exams is greater that that of girls. For instance in General Education, the general pass rate is at 99.7%.
Meanwhile,Girls pass rate is 99.8% which less than that of boys which is at 99.6%.
In Technical, Vocational and Science courses the general pass rate is 97.5%. Male candidates also outnumbered female candidates with 97.7% and 97.5%, respectively.
According to Dr Bernard Bahati, Director General of NESA, the 2022/2023 academic year saw 48,699 students who were registered to sit for the exams for the advanced level secondary school in general science included 27,382 girls and 21,317 boys.
In the Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs), the students who were registered to sit for the exams was 2,293 girls and 1,708 boys, while in TVET schools the total number was 28,192 with 12,966 and 15,226 of girls and boys respectively.
Last year, TTC pass rate was 99%, which has increased compared to the current one of 99.7%. For Vocational and technical the pass slightly decreased from 97.8% to 97.6%.
Gaspard Twagirayezu, the Minister of Education said that the number of students going to the University is increasing.
Notably, students who are dissatisfied with the results are allowed to appeal but the appeal should be approved by the head of the school and then be sent to NESA for review.The response gets to studentwithin 60 days.
