Former Rwanda captain Haruna Niyonzima has been appointed assistant coach of BK Pro League side Gasogi United.
The club confirmed the appointment on Thursday, September 24, marking Niyonzima’s first coaching role in Rwanda’s top flight.
“Haruna Niyonzima joins the Gasogi United coaching staff. We are delighted to welcome him…” the club announced on its official social media platforms.
Niyonzima’s appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter after a distinguished playing career that saw him become one of Rwanda’s most prominent midfielders.
He began his career at Etincelles before going on to enjoy successful spells with Rayon Sports, APR FC and AS Kigali.
His performances in Rwanda earned him a move to Tanzanian giants Young Africans (Yanga SC), where he established himself before later joining their arch-rivals Simba SC.
At international level, Niyonzima earned more than 100 caps for Amavubi and captained the national team for several years, becoming one of the most influential figures of his generation in Rwandan football.
He began pursuing coaching qualifications in 2025 and later travelled to Spain for an advanced coaching programme offered through a partnership between Visit Rwanda and LaLiga side Atlético Madrid.
Gasogi United will hope to benefit from Niyonzima’s experience and knowledge as the club looks to strengthen its technical department and improve its competitiveness in the league.
